Prabowo Subianto Aims to Lower Tuition Fees for Public Universities: Let’s Crunch the Numbers

Jakarta – The President-elect, Prabowo Subianto, has committed to reducing the Single Tuition Fee (UKT) for public universities. In his upcoming leadership, he will put in efforts to make this a reality.

This statement was made by Prabowo during an exclusive interview on TvOne titled “Prabowo Subianto Speaks for Indonesia” on Wednesday, (22/5).

“Especially in state universities, which are funded by public money (state budget), the fees should not be high, if possible, very minimal or free. We have to calculate and work hard for it,” Prabowo said.

He also pointed out the significant changes in the education system since the New Order era, where education has transformed into an industry that follows capitalist values.

“So, the mindset is that everything can be turned into a market, even though it is a public good and a social responsibility for a country,” Prabowo emphasized.

Looking ahead, as times evolve, Prabowo mentioned that the government will strive for improvements in the education sector. One of the programs that is expected to bring in substantial state revenue is the industrial downstreaming initiated by President Jokowi.

“Of course, we need to carry out downstreaming to increase added value and enhance our education,” he added.
