Jakarta – During the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue 2024 held in Singapore, there was a heartwarming moment when Indonesian Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto met with Timor Leste President Jose Manuel Ramos Horta.
Prabowo and Horta greeted each other warmly and engaged in conversation as they walked to the dinner table on Friday (31/5). Prabowo, dressed in a black suit, was seen laughing, embracing, and patting Horta on the shoulder. The exchange between the two national figures was filled with a sense of camaraderie.
During a Q&A session, Prabowo spoke about how Indonesia, which had previously experienced conflicts with Timor Leste, has now developed a strong friendship with the country.
“Imagine, now I am sitting with Ramos Horta. He invited me to Timor Leste, and I am considering attending,” Prabowo mentioned.
Prabowo highlighted Indonesia’s historical ties with neighboring countries like Timor Leste, Malaysia, and Singapore. Despite past conflicts, efforts to mend relationships and reduce tensions have been ongoing.
“We managed to resolve our differences without any external interference. We have settled disputes with Malaysia and Singapore,” Prabowo stated.
“Now we are like brothers. We are discussing the possibility of building bridges, such as one between Singapore and Batam and another between Malaysia and Indonesia,” he added.
