Pak Wismoyo was a commander who had a significant impact on me. His teachings left a lasting impression on me. One of his main teachings to his men was to always think good, do good, and speak well. He emphasized the importance of not harboring negative thoughts towards others. This teaching has always stayed with me and I believe that the values he instilled are not only beneficial but also in line with Indonesian and TNI culture.
He believed that brave men must be happy and that a leader should uplift his men through activities like singing, sports, and group activities. He understood the importance of keeping his troops motivated and in good spirits, as they carry out the commander’s orders diligently.
I first met Pak Wismoyo Arismunandar when I joined KOPASSANDHA. He was serving as the Deputy Assistant for Security (Waaspam) with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, while I was a Second Lieutenant. I later learned that he was Pak Harto’s brother-in-law, which I found intriguing. Over time, as he became our Commander in KOPASSANDHA Group 1, I began to get to know him better.
Pak Wismoyo’s credo of ‘Think good, do good, and speak well,’ impacted me greatly. He always emphasized the importance of maintaining good spirits and a positive attitude. He encouraged us to be spirited, enthusiastic, and to show appreciation when needed. Despite some mocking from seniors and colleagues, I believed in the validity of his teachings. To make our troops and ourselves happy, we must pay attention to even the smallest details.
He stressed the unity between a leader and his men, often encouraging leaders to participate in their men’s activities, even if it meant singing out of tune or dancing enthusiastically. This camaraderie fosters a strong bond between the leader and his troops, creating a positive and supportive environment.
Pak Wismoyo’s emphasis on discipline, loyalty, and honor resonated with me. He believed in giving second chances to those who made mistakes and admonished against speaking ill of others. He led by example, participating in training exercises despite injuries and excelling in sports like swimming, volleyball, and marksmanship.
His dedication to marksmanship inspired me to improve my shooting skills, an essential trait for a member of the Infantry Corps. Under his leadership, I became one of the best shooters in KOPASSUS and KOSTRAD. Additionally, his reminder to stay close to the Almighty God before my first operation as a Company Commander left a profound impact on me, highlighting the importance of spiritual strength in times of peril.
Overall, Pak Wismoyo’s teachings and leadership style have shaped my own approach to leading and motivating troops. His emphasis on creating a happy and supportive environment, his commitment to discipline and loyalty, and his example of humility and forgiveness continue to influence me to this day.
