Prabowo Subianto, the Indonesian Defense Minister and President-elect, recently visited Papua New Guinea for an official meeting with Prime Minister James Marape on August 21st. The two leaders discussed various issues, including bilateral and international matters, in order to strengthen the longstanding strategic partnership between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
Prabowo stated that Indonesia and Papua New Guinea have synergy and can collaborate in sectors such as food production, agriculture, fisheries, mining, minerals, and tourism. He also offered opportunities for Papua New Guinean youths to study at the Indonesian Defense University.
Marape appreciated Prabowo’s commitment to peace and reconciliation and the continuation of programs initiated by President Joko Widodo. He noted that the relationship between the two countries has improved, creating new opportunities for collaboration.
Overall, Marape highlighted the improved business opportunities and cross-border movement between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, emphasizing the positive outcomes of their strengthened relationship.
