Prabowo’s enthusiasm at his first UN General Assembly was fiery, but there was still something that bothered as he downplayed the situation in Gaza. The word “genocide” was not mentioned when he talked about Gaza. Greenpeace expressed this assessment on their official Instagram account, criticizing Prabowo’s promise to establish diplomatic relations with countries built on colonized land. Despite the passionate delivery of President Prabowo Subianto’s speech at this year’s UN General Assembly, it was still controversial. Besides promising to recognize Israel, his speech failed to address the genocide in Gaza in front of world leaders. In his speech, Prabowo only mentioned the word “genocide” once, without linking it to the Israeli bombardment and starvation in Gaza. His attitude towards the destruction in Gaza seemed dismissive, referring to it simply as a “humanitarian disaster” rather than a genocide. This contradicted the increasing international community’s stance on Gaza as a genocide. Greenpeace stated that Prabowo’s choice of words regarding Gaza, and his promise to consider recognizing Israel’s sovereignty, reflected his lack of seriousness towards the genocide in Gaza and the struggle for Palestinian independence.
