My mentors from the ‘45 generation are field leaders, combat force commanders, and military leaders. I have learned five important things from them that have greatly influenced my personality. Firstly, their unwavering patriotism and love for our homeland, which has never wavered despite their age. Secondly, confidence in their abilities and decisions. Thirdly, their intellect and dedication to lifelong learning beyond their specific field of expertise. Fourthly, their good sense of humor, which allows them to connect emotionally with their subordinates and lead with empathy. And finally, their flexibility and adaptability, as they are not overly restricted by rigid protocols.
The attitude and leadership qualities of a military leader are forged on the battlefield. As a young officer, I was fortunate enough to receive education, training, nurturing, and mentorship from key figures of the independence war and early military operators of the Republic of Indonesia. At that time, the survival of the Republic was uncertain, with limited resources and support. The success of Indonesia’s independence was largely due to the bravery and sacrifice of thousands of Indonesians from diverse backgrounds who chose to fight for freedom.
I come from a family deeply rooted in the ‘45 generation, with my grandfather and uncles actively involved in the struggle for independence. Their sacrifices and commitment to Indonesia’s sovereignty have had a profound impact on my upbringing and values. Being raised in a family of freedom fighters and surrounded by the spirit of ’45, I learned firsthand the importance of upholding the principles of independence, respect, and equality.
Interacting with key figures of the ‘45 generation, such as Mohammad Hatta and Sarwo Edhie Wibowo, further solidified my understanding of the sacrifices and dedication of those who fought for our nation’s freedom. These individuals played pivotal roles in shaping Indonesia’s history and instilled in me a deep sense of patriotism and responsibility towards my country.
Through my military career, I had the privilege of working under the guidance of experienced leaders like Benny Moerdani and Ali Moertopo, who exemplified strong leadership qualities and unwavering dedication to Indonesia. Their mentorship and guidance have been invaluable in shaping my own leadership style and approach to service.
Overall, the lessons I have learned from the ‘45 generation have deeply influenced my character and leadership philosophy. Their unwavering patriotism, confidence, intellect, sense of humor, and flexibility serve as guiding principles in my military career and life as a whole. I am honored to have been mentored by such remarkable individuals and strive to uphold the values they have instilled in me.”
