Welcoming the holy month of Ramadan is something eagerly anticipated by Muslims worldwide as it is a time for increased worship and closeness to Allah SWT. Apart from physical and mental preparation, the tradition of bathing to purify oneself, both physically and spiritually, is considered a recommended practice that should not be overlooked. This bathing ritual serves as a form of spiritual purification, seeking forgiveness for past sins, and preparing oneself to observe fasting with a clean heart and clear mind before the arrival of Ramadan.
As Ramadan approaches, there are several preparations to be made, and one of them is cleansing oneself mentally and physically. One of the ways to achieve this is by performing a sunnah bath before entering the month of Ramadan. It is important to note that this pre-Ramadan bath is not obligatory, but rather a recommended practice for those seeking spiritual purity and completeness in their worship.
Intention, or niat, is an essential aspect of every act of worship in Islam. When performing the sunnah bath before Ramadan, one must make the intention in their heart solely for the sake of Allah SWT. The prescribed wording for this intention is, “Aku berniat menjalankan mandi yang disunnahkan kepadaku pada malam ini di bulan Ramadhan karena Allah Ta’ala.” Following this intention, the steps for performing the sunnah bath before Ramadan are similar to those of the obligatory bath or ghusl. These steps include reciting the intention, washing the hands, cleaning the private parts, performing ablution, wetting the head, and finally, washing the entire body thoroughly.
The sunnah bath before Ramadan can be taken at any time before the start of the holy month. However, the most recommended times are on the last day of Sha’ban or the night before the first day of Ramadan before the Fajr prayer. By observing this sunnah bath correctly, Muslims can ensure they enter the month of Ramadan in a state of purity and devotion, ready to fulfill their fasting obligations. May our fasting be accepted by Allah SWT this year, and may our worship during Ramadan be rewarding and fulfilling for all believers.
