The Influence of Prabowo Subianto on the Global Stage as Indonesia’s Future President, According to The Straits Times

Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s president-elect for the term 2024-2029, is expected to boost Indonesia’s global influence significantly once he assumes office. The Straits Times, a prominent media outlet in Singapore, recently published an article titled “Prabowo has big plans for Indonesia on the global stage,” highlighting the proactive foreign policy agenda anticipated under Prabowo’s leadership.

The article emphasizes that Prabowo has already taken steps to position himself as Indonesia’s de facto foreign minister even before officially becoming president. He has conducted diplomatic visits to more than 10 countries, including major global powers like China, Japan, Russia, and Australia, within a seven-month period after winning the election.

Indonesian citizens and experts alike are optimistic about Prabowo’s presidency, believing that he will focus on advancing Indonesia’s role in global diplomacy. With his proactive international approach, many expect Prabowo to strengthen communication with other nations and potentially act as a mediator in conflict resolution efforts.

Prabowo’s recent diplomatic engagements, both as the current Minister of Defense and future president, demonstrate his strong commitment to international affairs. For instance, his involvement in addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict and offering humanitarian support to Palestine showcase his dedication to global issues.

Julia Lau, a senior fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, mentioned in the article that Prabowo is likely to play a more assertive role in shaping Indonesia’s foreign policy. However, she emphasized the importance of having a competent Ministry of Foreign Affairs to implement his ambitious vision successfully.

While there is optimism surrounding Prabowo’s presidency, The Straits Times article also notes that the Indonesian public is cautiously observing his actions, hoping that he will deliver on his campaign promises and take concrete steps to address critics’ concerns.

As Prabowo gears up to assume office, there is keen interest in how he will position Indonesia on the global stage, particularly in navigating geopolitical challenges and advancing the nation’s interests in an interconnected world.
